MEYERSDALE - Emma Berkey nailed a three-pointer from the corner just 36 seconds into the game, surpassing the 1,000th-career point milestone Tuesday night while highlighting Shanksville's 46-36 victory over Meyersdale.
Berkey, a 5-7 junior point guard, entered the game needing just one point to achieve the coveted scoring milestone, and despite box-and-one coverage, managed to sink the dramatic NBA-caliber shot.
“Our defense was right there,” Meyersdale coach Bob Minnick said. “She made it right over our defense.
“If she had any nerves, she didn't show it.”
The game was stopped with Shanksville leading 3-0 for the traditional game ball presentation. When play resumed, the Lady Vikings spurted out to a 15-10 first quarter lead although Berkey was held to only five points in the first half. She ended the game with 11 points. Teammate Susie Kimmel found a hole in the box defense on Berkey and took charge of the scoring with a team-high 16 points - 14 of those coming in the first half. Lacy Lowry contributed nine.
Berkey's milestone overshadowed a solid performance on both ends of the court by Meyersdale junior Kara Yutzy who netted a game-high 21 points.
“Kara had a very good game,” Minnick said. “She shot well for us tonight. She definitely kept us right there ... close.”
Shanksville also prevailed in the JV game, 20-17.
Meyersdale (6-11) travels to Berlin while Shanksville hosts Shade on Thursday.
